WASHINGTON (Jan. 26, 2017) — In response to massive crowds who visited the National Mall last week to participate in the inauguration of the 45th President of the United States and the Women’s March on Washington, the Trust for the National Mall urges visitors to support the care and restoration of the National Mall.

This isn’t the first time the National Mall has had large numbers of visitors and it won’t be the last. The park hosts 33 million visits each year—more than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Yosemite national parks combined—and that number is expected to grow significantly by 2020. Because of the record number of annual visits and, more importantly, aging infrastructure, the National Mall requires an extensive amount of private and public funding to restore and preserve the park and improve the visitor experience.

Marking its 10th year as the official non-profit partner of the National Park Service, National Mall and Memorial Parks Division, the Trust for the National Mall raises private funds and awareness for critical projects, as well as engages volunteers in the movement to restore, improve and preserve the National Mall. Private philanthropy has helped to build every monument and memorial on the National Mall and private philanthropy will help with the care and restoration efforts for generations to come.

“From hosting national celebrations to First Amendment demonstrations, last week’s events were a perfect example of how important the National Mall is to our nation. It’s time that visitors understand that they have a valuable role to play in its care and preservation,” said Catherine Townsend, President of the Trust for the National Mall.
